When night falls, the road markings illuminated by car headlights resemble luminous ribbons, clearly guiding the way. This phenomenon isn't due to the light emitted by the markings themselves, but rather to the reflective glass beads incorporated into them.

01 How Reflective Glass Beads Work
The key to the "luminescence" of reflective glass beads lies in their retro-reflective nature. When light from a car's headlights strikes the marking surface, the glass beads, acting as tiny optical elements, refract the incident light into the beads.
The light then reflects off the bottom of the beads and returns to the direction of the light source, meaning the driver's eyes. This process achieves directional reflection, making the markings appear exceptionally bright at night.
The refractive index of glass beads typically ranges from 1.50 to 1.64, an optical property that determines their reflective efficiency. Internal-mixed glass beads are mixed into the paint during the production process at a specific ratio (approximately 20%). Over time and due to road wear, the surface glass beads gradually fall off, revealing the internal-mixed glass beads, ensuring that the marking remains reflective throughout its service life. This dual guarantee ensures the long-lasting reflective effect of road markings.
03 Glass Bead Quality Standards
The quality of glass beads directly affects the reflective effect of road markings. Roundness is a key indicator, and national standards require a minimum of 80%.
Glass beads with a high roundness have better optical properties and produce more regular retroreflection. Interestingly, a small number of irregular microbeads also have value. They create diffuse reflection, softening the reflected light and preventing overstimulation of the driver's vision.

Transparency and cleanliness are also important quality indicators. High transparency reduces light energy loss, while high cleanliness ensures stable reflective performance. Glass bead particle size distribution also follows strict standards: surface-sprinkled types generally range from 250 to 600 microns, while internally mixed types range from 106 to 600 microns.

04 The Critical Impact of Application Techniques
Even with high-quality glass beads and coatings, application technique is crucial. The reflective effect is best achieved when the glass beads are half-embedded and half-exposed on the marking surface.

Application temperature control is particularly critical: too high a temperature causes the glass beads to sink into the coating, resulting in poor reflective effect; too low a temperature causes the glass beads to lose their adhesion and easily fall off.

The amount of surface-sprinkled glass beads used also requires precise control, typically 0.3-0.5 kg/m2. Too much will cause dust accumulation, while too little will weaken the reflected light, affecting the reflective effect. Reflective glass beads, though small, are a vital component of nighttime driving safety. From city roads to highways, these tiny glass beads silently protect every nighttime journey.
